Hey ,
The other day I witnessed a heated debate between two six-year-olds over Pokémon cards that sparked a surprising realization about our adult struggles with health goals.
Picture this: two kids, a hallway, and some seriously intense trash talk about who has the Charizard with more damage- IYKYK. One boy, completely caught up in the moment, lashed out with a (very light) slap. Everyone was surprised, including the "slapp-er." Almost instantly, he apologized with regret, claiming it was an accident.
"Hmmm," I thought, "I'd say it was more of a 'react-cident.'" 😏
This scene was a classic example of a young nervous system being put on high alert and reacting physically. It got me thinking about how often adults have similar "react-cidents" in our own lives, especially when it comes to our health.
We are so good at setting lofty intentions... while life makes other plans. No matter how pretty your vision board is, a stressful event, unexpected challenges, or a busy schedule can derail our awesome visions quicker than you can say Pikachu.
Like our younger selves, we're wired to react to stress. But rather than a rogue slap, our "react-cidents" often look more like forgetting the self-care we know is good for us in favor of what will provide the quickest, most comfortable solution to ease our discomfort. This can make staying on track with our intentions a real challenge.
And let's face it - there's nothing more frustrating then letting yourself down by falling off your own "health wagon." However, just like my young friend in the hallway, awareness of our missteps can be your (uncomfortable) catalyst for revision.
Your 'react-cidents' don't define your journey, they propel it.
Working with the chronic illness community and being part of it myself has shown me that your ability to keep showing up, learning, and moving forward - even when things get tough - is the true foundation of wellbeing.
As such, this is an integral aspect of my coaching process. We often hear about perfect health before's and after's without the details of the messy middle. But the mess is where the magic is born. Your "react-cidents," are the ingredients from which to develop personalized strategies for managing stress. What's more, they teach you how to better attend to your unique needs and goals to meet the dynamic challenges of your life.
When you work with me, it's about recognizing that the path will never be perfect, but together we'll honor the twists and turns, discovering your incredible strength and resilience along the way.
