Hiya ,
The story of the pots of herbs on my balcony continues...
After the disaster (1) I had with my chives and parsley last year, I was scared to buy anything new this year. Finally, I decided that was crazy and I had to try something, even if I wasn't successful. At least I'd learn what does and doesn't work.
Because the rosemary had survived and was doing OK, I thought I'd try another herb from the same family - sage.
Earlier in the growing season, as pots of herbs appeared (2) in gardening shops and market stalls, I started looking. The trouble was, none of the plants looked as healthy as I thought they should. It got later and later in the season, and I hadn't purchased anything. I thought I was going to miss out.
Then, one day, when I was at the farmers' market buying my weekly supply of fruit and vegetables, I saw some pots of sage, and the plants looked really strong and healthy. I bought one. It was cheaper than plants I'd looked at in other places, which made the bargain hunter (3) in me very happy.
It's settled in next to the rosemary and seems to be doing well.
Speaking of the rosemary, my job later, in the autumn, will be to plant it into a bigger pot. I was going to do it last autumn, but never got organised. It needs to happen this autumn - I don't think it's as happy as it could be.
I think sage is the only thing I'll buy this year, although you never know. Maybe I'll see something else and purchase it.
It's hard to choose what else to buy. Oregano, thyme (4), and mint are on my list, but I haven't used any of them in the kitchen much.
However, the other day, I ate some pan-fried chicken, flavoured with thyme. (I didn't cook it!) It was delicious. So at the time I write this, thyme will be the next herb I add to my collection.
How are your plants growing, ? Do you have them outside or inside? Any ideas for what I should try and grow next year?
Until next time,
Andrea
(1) disaster - mess, really bad result
(2) appeared - you could (suddenly) see them
(3) bargain hunter - someone who looks for speacial offers or sales, to buy something for a cheaper price than is normal
(4) thyme - another herb from the Mediterranean region. You say it the same as 'time'.
