It was strange, but I helped

Greetings ,

Back in November last year, I wrote about the week where people around me did strange things.

A bit before Christmas it happened again. Just one guy, but it was very strange ...

I was sitting in a shopping centre between lessons. A man was sitting near me, talking on his phone. Because he was talking, I didn't realise when he started speaking to me,

"Excuse me. Excuse me." (He was talking in German.)

It took a moment, but he caught my attention (1). He wanted to know if I had a pen he could use.

I did and I got it out of my bag.

A while ago I had decided to buy a 'nice' pen to keep in my bag, instead of a really cheap plastic one. OK, the 'nice' pen wasn't super expensive, but it wrote smoothly and I liked the colour - I wanted it back!

I kept an eye on the guy, making sure he didn't move away with my pen. He didn't. It wasn't very long (a minute or so) and he gave the pen back to me.

Then, to my absolute surprise, he gave me his phone, as well 😳.

The person he had been speaking to was still connected - he wanted me to talk to them and write an address down for him!

Part of me wanted to laugh - he needed help understanding something in German and he asked me, another non-native speaker (and although I usually do OK these days, phone calls aren't really my favourite thing to do)!

It was a little bit difficult to understand the lady. But it wasn't because of it being German, or even her accent (2). It was simply because it was very hard to hear her. The volume was very low.

Anyway, I wrote down the address and passed the phone (but not my pen!) back. As he repeated the address to the lady, I listened and noticed it was actually printed (part of an email) on the paper he had given me πŸ˜‘.

So, that's my latest 'strange' story. Feel free to share any that you have had...

Catch ya next week,

Andrea

(1) caught someones attention - 'got' their attention. Made it so they focussed on you.

(2) accent - the way people say their words, the sound of their speach. For example, the Scottish accent (sound) that Sean Connery spoke with.
