Keeping the ironing to a minimum

What went wrong this week?

Hi ,

Of all the jobs I do around the house, ironing is one that I've managed to avoid (1), or at least keep to a minimum.

Growing up in a family of six, I've done quite a bit of ironing. Not just my things, but things for the whole family. And I don't find it so bad. You start with a basket full of creased (2) items, and at the end, it's all smooth and ready to be worn or put away.

When I moved into a flat by myself, I didn't iron much. I had a job where I could wear casual clothing, and I chose things that didn't need ironing. There were a few items that I didn't wear so often that I had to iron. It was a nice balance.

I also organised my washing so that things didn't get too creased. Hanging washing outside on the washing line to dry was great. In winter, I kept things inside, but hung them on a clothes horse (3) as soon as the washing machine had finished.

Moving to Germany changed that. I had more clothes that needed ironing. Not my tops (4). I still tried to buy things I didn't need to iron. However, every weekend, I had to do my trousers or skirt ready for the next week.

OK, I ironed regularly, but it was usually only one item. I didn't have to do things for a whole family. Or a blouse or shirt for every day of the week.

Well, I've just done a heap of ironing. It's springtime at the moment, and I'm not sure if I can wear a skirt or not. It might be too cold. But it doesn't matter. I can wait and choose on Monday when I see the weather, because I've done both a skirt and a pair of trousers.

Plus, I've done the tops I'll need for the week. Yes, I said tops. I can't believe I ironed tops. I must be getting fussy (5) in my old age!

How about you, , do you like ironing? Do you do it because you have to, or do you avoid it?

Have a crease-free week,

Andrea

(1) avoid - stay away from, stop from happening

(2) creased - with (unwanted) lines and folds in it, not flat and smooth

(3) clothes horse - a frame you can fold up, used inside your house to hang washing on while it dries

(4) tops - a general word for things worn on your upper body. Includes t-shirts, bouses, shirts etc.

(5) fussy - worrying about small things that are unimportant
