Hey ,
I love looking at colourful things. It can be flowers, a sunset, a landscape with fields, trees, hills and mountains or something man-made.
When it comes to combining (1) colours, some people do an amazing job. It doesn't matter if it's the clothes they wear or the rooms of their house, they can mix and match different hues (2) and the results are stunning (3). They just have a natural eye for colour.
Often a good mix of colours will have a few that are similar and then a contrasting colour (4) that really adds something special. It impresses me when I see what others can do, but it's not one of my strengths.
I play it too safe.
Shopping for wool or material (5) for a new project is really exciting. The colours I see in the shop are beautiful and I can feel so inspired. But in the end I probably won't buy anything outside my 'normal' range. I know the colours I like and I don't feel confident moving too far away from them.
Even if I decide to use several colours, I won't have that contrasting one that makes the whole thing 'pop'. I'll just get a dark and light tone of the same colour. It may be really nice, but it won't be super-artistic or eye-catching.
Things gets tricky when I decide to make something as a gift. We all like different colours - what I like is probably nothing like what the person who will get whatever I make likes.
It was particularly difficult last year, knitting something with stripes! I didn't just have to choose one colour, but four or five 🫣.
It took a while, playing with different mixes. The ladies in that shop are really helpful (and patient!). One of them assisted me, finding different colours that might work, until finally we had something that looked good. I was happy with the finished project and so was the person I gave it to.
But it was still 'safe' rather than 'stunning'.
So, do you have a good eye for colour, or like me, do you just play it safe? Do you know someone who naturally does a wonderful job of combining colours - maybe the clothes they wear, or in their house.
Send me a message and let me know. Or just tell me your favourite colour.
Have a fantastic week,
Andrea
(1) combining - mixing, using one colour with another
(2) hues - another word for 'colours'
(3) stunning - really amazing
(4) contrasting colour - a colour that is quite different from the others/other one you are using
(5) material - 'cloth', what you buy if you want to sew something yourself
