Thank you, old flat. Hello new flat.

Greetings ,

I've gone through a roller-coaster of emotions in the past week.

I wanted to move. I didn't want to look out my window at a huge building (I should say 'huge buildings'!), especially when people moved in and could look back at me. I didn't like the thought of the hundreds of other people who would suddenly be on the street outside my place.

It took a long time to find, but the new flat has soooo many advantages that the old one didn't. There's the lovely quiet neighbourhood, the garden, the balcony, the five minute walk to the S-Bahn station, the wonderful (almost) new kitchen.

But sitting in my new flat that evening after moving in, I felt really sad and confused. I even wondered if I had done the right thing.

The old flat appeared at exactly the right moment.

After briefly living in Koblenz, I had a job back in Frankfurt and needed a flat. It was close to both U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations, it was nice and sunny and there was an open green area on the other side of the street. Importantly, the price was definitely right!

Yes, there were a couple of problems, but it would give me time to organise myself and find something better.

However, I grew comfortable there. I learned to work around the problems and the old flat became my refuge (1), my safe space through some difficult times.

I ended up staying over seven years!

It was strange going back to do a final couple of jobs. Now the space that was my personal territory for so long is empty and blank. Without my things there, it doesn't feel like I belong there anymore.

Which is good.

Because except for a while that first evening, I feel settled in my new place. Thoughts of the move being a mistake were gone when I woke up the day after I moved.

Unpacking will take time (!), but that's OK. The doubts have gone. This is 'home'.

Is moving to a new flat or house easy for you ? Have you ever been sad to leave a place or are you always happy and looking forward to living in a new place? You are welcome to share your thoughts with me.

'Bye for now,

Andrea
