When I grow up I want to be a fireman.

Hello ,

On Saturday, I walked through a Fun Day for junior members of local fire brigades. Most of the children had their fire brigade uniforms on and were helping in the stalls for their brigade as well as visiting other stalls for food and fun. There was a range of interesting activities for the youngsters, and some demonstrations run by adult fire brigade members.

Yes, I understand, most of the children join their local fire brigade for social reasons. They don't really want to put out fires and save people from dangerous situations. Only a dedicated few will go on to become 'real' fire officers.

But it got me thinking back to my own childhood. I wanted to be an airline hostess and fly and see interesting places that were totally different to where I lived. Why an airline hostess? Because I had a book showing a little girl about my age doing exactly the same thing. She wore a uniform, the same as the 'real' cabin crew, helped with the passengers and then saw amazing things on the island of Bali.

That idea didn't last long. My Mum was a high school English teacher and soon I decided that I wanted to do that, just like Mum. The dream lasted until I was about 14 and one day in English class realised that trying to teach Shakespeare to uninterested teenagers wasn't my idea of fun! But I really liked science, so maybe I could find work doing something scientific. And that is what I did for many years.

It's interesting to look back and see the paths we end up following - and those we don't. Was your childhood similar? Is your job what you said you wanted to do when you were young? Can you ever remember changing your mind about what you wanted to be? Take a moment and tell me your story - how you ended up with the job you do today.

Until next week,

Andrea
