Greetings ,
Although we tried to have a vegetable garden most of the time, there was only one house I lived in when I was a child, where we had a lovely flower garden. Yes, Mum worked to keep it nice, but all the really hard work was done by a lady who had lived there some years before we moved in.
She planned it and planted (1) it. There were rose bushes along one fence, and a magnolia and camellia bush (2) in another area.
Every spring, we had a heap of daffodils (3). They were beautiful! Until then, I thought there were only a couple of types of daffodils. But we had lots of different types: the normal yellow ones, ones where the flower was a bit of a different shape, and ones that were a pale yellow, mixed with a light pink colour.
When I had my first flat, I asked if I could look after a little piece of the garden. The landlord said yes, and the first things I planted were a few flowers. However, they never grew! I was really disappointed. So I gave up! I didn't plant any more flowers. Instead, I started a vegetable garden (which was very successful).
I love walking through gardens or parks in the warmer months of the year and looking at all the amazing flowers. But I don't often have a bunch of flowers in my flat. That's partly because I think they look beautiful outside.
It's also because I'm too practical. If you have flowers inside in a vase, you have to top up (4) their water. If they drop petals (or insects!), you have to clean them up. And finally, you have to throw them away and clean the vase. It's a lot of work for the few days the flowers are alive.
However, maybe I'm changing. I ended up with some flowers a while ago, and I loved having them in my house. They were so nice, I think I might do it more often!
How about you, ? Do you often have a vase of flowers in your house, or is it something you seldom do?
Have a flowery week,
Andrea
(1) planted - put the plants (or seeds) in the ground so that they could grow
(2) magnolia and camellia bush - two plants that have beautiful spring flowers.
(3) daffodils - bright yellow flowers that are very popular in spring time (around Easter in Germany)
(4) top up (something) - fill it up, even when it's not completely empty (often a cup of tea or coffee or a glass of wine)
