G'day ,
I work best when I'm under a bit of pressure. When there's too much time before I need to have something done, I leave it.
Then I procrastinate - I do other jobs to fill in time, so I have a reason for not working on the task (1) I should be doing.
But as the deadline nears, I feel the pressure and can finally concentrate on the job I need to do.
This was clear with my university studies. Lecturers (2) set assignments (3) for us. I didn't quite leave them until the last minute or work through the night to finish them (until after midnight, maybe... but not right through the night!), but I didn't budget much extra time, either.
However, in the last couple of semesters of study, my plans almost didn't work. While I was busy, working extra hard to finish assignments, people called me on the phone.
There was the friend who needed someone she could share her problems with. But there were also calls from other, random people, like the family who had moved away a few years before and chose that moment to say 'Hi'!
I couldn't believe it!
A similar thing happened last week.
I said I'd house-sit for a friend. While they were away, I went to their place several times, watered their plants, and checked their mail.
To surprise them, I decided to cook something ready for when they arrived home on Friday.
I purchased the things I needed and was going to do some preparation on Thursday night so that cooking on Friday morning (before work!) would be faster.
Guess what happened?
A friend emailed me on Thursday afternoon - someone I haven't heard from since April 2020. Could I look through a document for him?
Urgently?
It was my choice. I could have said 'No'. But I didn't.
I checked the document. Then, I started work in the kitchen.
It was late when I finished. But I got it all done. And everything went smoothly on Friday morning 😊.
How about you, ? Do you need pressure to make you work on something? Do you leave things right to the last minute or plan everything out and start way before you need to? And what do you do when something unexpected happens?
Tell me your experiences.
Have a well-planned week,
Andrea
(1) task - job, something to do
(2) lecturer - a 'teacher' at a university. Not always a professor.
(3) assignments - homework tasks
