How do you choose a home?

Hi again,

Finding a home can be a problem. Even if you rent, it's not easy to get your 'perfect place'. We end up making compromises on what we will and won't live with.

I wasn't so selective with my first place. Although I had my name on the list for a nice new apartment, I ended up moving into an older one. It was good enough and only a 15 minute walk to work. Plus I could grow vegetables in the garden.

Then I moved to a new city. I shared a house with others for a few weeks before looking for a place of my own.

It was hard to find somewhere I felt happy with. Some flats were too far away, others were too dark (I need a light, bright place). Finally the right place appeared and I lived there for the next 15 years. Note - the location was good, but the heater was bad - in winter it was really cold inside!

When I moved to Germany, I had forgotten the difficulties of finding my last flat and thought it would be simple to rent somewhere in a big city. It was VERY challenging, especially with the language problem - I didn't speak German and usually the people I tried to contact didn't speak English! Nevertheless, after four weeks of searching, I found a great little place.

I was very sad when I left that flat ☹️.

In a new city, the search for a place began again. My temporary housing was much bigger than my last place, but it was horrible. Most of the rooms didn't get much sunlight. It was also cold (and I was there in summer!).

I looked for five months, but couldn't find the 'right' place: in a good area, sunny, with the features I wanted and at the right price.

So I gave up and decided to move back to the other city I had lived in. The problem - to find another place, but quickly. And it happened. In record time I found a place that was almost perfect 😀.

Do you have special things you look for when you choose a flat? Is the area important? The features? Do you want lots of sunlight, like me? Maybe you think I'm too fussy - I should just take what I see. Reply to this message and share your views.

'Bye,

Andrea
