A day in Munich, and I didn't get lost 😊

Hello again ,

Years ago (about 11, if you're counting), a friend and I took a trip to Munich. It was February and absolutely freezing!

We were there for the weekend, but I didn't really get a feel for the city.

On the Saturday we did a tour of the Dachau Concentration Camp.

I'm glad that I saw the Camp in the middle of winter. The cold and patches of snow added to the picture in my mind of how hard the conditions must have been there.

By the time we arrived back in Munich, it was dark and my friend was frozen, so she went to the hotel room to thaw out (1) while I found somewhere to buy food.

Sunday morning we did a walking tour.

But, I must confess (3), I don't really like guided tours. You go quickly from one place to the next. Too quickly for me. I don't have time to get my bearings (2) or fully connect the information I'm hearing with what we are looking at or walking past.

I finally made it back to Munich in October 2021, to visit a shop I had found online. I carefully researched the public transport system and everything went well. I found the shop and purchased πŸ˜€.

Then I had free time to just walk around the city. It was a chilly autumn day, so I kept moving. I found some of the places I could remember from the tour (e.g. the Viktualienmarkt) and thought I could get to a couple of others. I did, but it took ages! In fact, the whole central city area seemed very confusing.

Looking at the map later, I realised there was a lot shorter way I could have walked ...

I've just been to Munich again, on a warm, sunny (perfect!) October day.

And this time the city started to make sense. I could see how all the pieces fitted together and I didn't feel confused or lost like I did last time. In fact, I think I quite like Munich 😊.

I often hear lots of positive comments about Hamburg, but how about Munich? Do you like it? Why? Do you have an interesting story you'd like to share?

Until next week,

Andrea

(1) thaw out - 'unfreeze'. To take something out of the freezer and have it get 'warm' (above 0Β°C and so not frozen).

(2) get (my/your) bearings - understand where you are compared to other locations. Know which direction other buildings or landmarks are in.

(3) confess - unwillingly tell the truth about something.
