Hi ,
I enjoy cooking and baking.
When I have time, I prepare my main meal for the day. As I usually cook for one, I buy small amounts of vegetabĺes and meat. Shop assistants sometimes look at me strangely, but I don't care. My system works for me. I eat food prepared from fresh ingredients, and I rarely throw things away because they have gone bad.
With my main meals, cooking for one is easy. But I never really thought about baking for one. Usually, you bake a batch (1) of biscuits or a complete cake. But that means you then have to eat all the biscuits or cake. Or, you have to find a reason to bake, like someone's birthday or a special morning tea (2).
Years ago, I started trying to make a couple of dessert (3) recipes that were a single serve. I'd cook my small treat and then eat the whole thing. That worked well.
Although I have seen recipes for a mug cake, I have never tried one. That was probably because you cooked them in a microwave oven, something I've never owned.
I don't eat many sugary things now, well heaps less than I did a few years ago. Nevertheless, I let myself have one or two treats each week. Buying a biscuit/muffin/piece of cake is easy. However, I wanted to prepare something myself. A single-sized something.
It took a few weeks to get right, but I have made a recipe for a little cake-thing. I say 'thing' because most people wouldn't call it a cake. But it works for me 😀.
It's really quick to make. I have to wait for it to cook, which takes longer than making it. When it comes out of the oven, I eat it. I should wait for it to cool, but I usually don't.
The great thing is when I'm finished, it's all gone. I can't go back and have a second (or third) piece; perfect for limiting how much sugar I eat.
Do you enjoy cooking or baking, ? Do you always follow a recipe, or do you sometimes experiment and make your own recipe?
Have a week full of tasty treats!
Andrea
(1) batch - 'group' of bíscuits from baking the recipe from one set of ingredients
(2) morning tea - the break for a drink and/or something to eat at around 10:30 in the morning
(3) dessert - the last part of a meal, that is usually sweet
