What’s the least you need to train to not lose progress?

A small study tested exactly this. It’s probably less than you think.

I'm spending it in Germany at Heide Park in Soltau riding rollercoasters.



Not really like my normal Friday routine.


Some weeks have days like this. Work, travel, family, or a birthday can prevent you from doing (all of) your planned training sessions.


Does this impact your progress, though?

Are you going to lose strength and muscle this fast?

Is this sport really that unforgiving?


What is actually the least amount of training needed to maintain strength?


A 2024 study looked at what remained after 3 months of reduced training frequency:


It included 34 young women who hadn't trained systematically for at least 2 years. Of those, 27 completed 12 weeks of lower-body resistance training and cycling twice per week - significantly improving their strength, aerobic power and muscle mass. The other 7 formed a non-training control group.
