Hi ,
My work with corporate teams often gives me insider's access to HR departments and the areas of wellness support they prioritize. Not surprisingly, in the USA this year there is a strong focus on "election-based-stress-disorder." While not a clinical diagnosis, according to the Mayo Clinic, the concept is very real.
Regardless of your political standing, we can all agree that when stress levels rise and anxiety is in the driver's seat, it can feel like the world is holding its breath. You're not alone if you're feeling the weight of it all.
In fact, studies show that election-related stress has skyrocketed since 2016, with even higher numbers reported in 2020. And with the 2024 election just around the corner, many of us are bracing for another wave of emotional uncertainty.
But here's the good news: You don't have to let election stress take over your life. There are simple, effective ways to reclaim your calm and navigate this challenging time with greater ease:
- Seek "Nutritious" Media: Taking a stand to lessen the amount of provocative, scroll-stopping, "junk media" consumption is SUCH an effective way to mitigate your stress activators. Choosing when, for how long, and with whom you receive your news from puts you back in the driver's seat of how much "activation" you allow into your days. Believe it or not, there are ways of receiving information without dropping into a stress spiral...
- Get Outside: One of the most powerful tools for stress reduction is right outside your door: nature. Taking a break from the day to walk in nature has been shown to:
Lower stress hormones like cortisol
Reduce anxiety and improve mood
Boost cognitive function and creativity
Enhance feelings of well-being and connection
If only there was a challenge to help you get outside each day... π.
(see link below)
- Focus On What Is IN Your Control: Dr Robert Bright, M.D., a psychologist at the Mayo Clinic says: "We've got to figure out how can we control what is controllable. What is within our control? What can we do? One thing we can do with this election is we can vote," says Dr. Bright.
Informed action is powerful action. By managing your stress and cultivating a clear mind, you can make a greater impact on the issues that matter most to you. This isn't about disengaging; it's about engaging strategically and with purpose.
