Hey ,
Every night I lock my door. Then, before I go to bed, I recheck (1) to make sure it's really locked. I'm not worried enough to go back a thousand times, but I need to double-check (2).
I have a good routine, so usually everything is fine - the door is already locked when I double-check. And I put my keys in the same place every day, so I always know where they are.
One morning, in my first flat, I was getting ready for work. I didn't leave myself much extra time in the mornings - I liked to sleep as long as I could.
So, I was ready to walk out the door. The last thing to do was grab (3) my keys - it's hard to drive a car without them. My car keys and house key were together on the one keyring.
Where were they?
They weren't in the place I always put them.
I looked around the flat.
Nothing.
I went through my bag and the pockets of my clothing.
Still nothing.
Now I was really starting to worry!
I had a spare key (4) for the door, and I could walk to work, so I decided to head off and think about it.
Out I went.
And there they were. I had left them outside in the lock all night! I felt so relieved (5).
Clearly, I lived in a safe neighbourhood. Nobody came into my flat and stole something or murdered me during the night. Even my (old) car was still there.
I did basically the same thing a few years later in my second flat, although by that time, I kept my car keys separate from my house keys. After rushing around the house looking for my house key, I walked out the door, and again, there it was.
My lesson? It's not much use locking a door from the inside if you leave the key on the outside.
Thankfully, nothing bad happened, and I can laugh when I remember how silly I was.
Have you done the same thing, ? Have you forgotten to take your keys out of the lock after opening your door? Or maybe you've lost your keys and it's taken you a while (hours or even a day or longer) to find them. Hit 'Reply' and tell me about it.
Wishing you a wonderful week,
Andrea
(1) recheck - check again
(2) double-check - check a second time
(3) grab - pick up quickly
(4) spare key - extra key
(5) relieved - the feeling when fear goes away and you can relax because everything's OK. Feeling of relief.
