When being at home was dangerous

Hiya ,

A few weeks ago, I went to work. It was a normal day and when I left, everything in my building was calm and quiet.

The story was different when I arrived home. The glass of our front door was still in place, but it was completely shattered (1). The door has two layers of glass, and even the inside one had cracks running through it. Outside, in one corner at the bottom of the door, were three places where it looked like the door had been hit really hard, or kicked.

My first look was when it was dark, so I didn't see the black mark where one corner of the outside doormat had been burned. Also, the name on my letterbox had totally disappeared. It wasn't just that our door had been hit; a bomb or something had exploded very close to the door.

As I write it, that sounds scary. However, because I wasn't at home when it happened, I wasn't frightened (2) or upset.

I don't know why we were bombed. The people living in one of the flats in our building have caused some problems, so I thought it might have had something to do with them. But I was wrong.

A day or two later, the same thing happened in another town not far from where I live.

A week or two after that, I was watching an information screen at a train station. Another building in a totally different town had experienced the same thing, but the result was a lot worse. The glass in the door had shattered, and the small pieces had fallen out onto the ground. Even the mailboxes next to the door had been blown up.

The good news is that the police caught the person who was responsible for (3) the bombs.

Unfortunately, our front door hasn't been repaired yet. I think that will happen in the next few days. And the really good thing is that I don't think anyone in our building was hurt.

I hope you haven't had any bombs near the building where you live and don't have any in the future. But I'm curious - how would you feel if a bomb went off close to your place? Would you move?

Stay safe.

Andrea

(1) shattered - broken into small pieces

(2) frightened - another word for scared

(3) responsible for - caused something to happen (it's usually something bad...)
